It’s the big event of the year! My son is turning five and starting school. He’s been so excited about this milestone so I wanted a party that would fittingly mark the occasion. He chose a dinosaur picture for the party invitations (which we designed using PicMonkey) so a dinosaur party it was to be! I really liked the idea of having a dinosaur themed party and quickly got into researching and creativity. Here are some of the great, and simple, ideas for decorations, food and games – some I used and some I didn’t, but are still worth sharing.

To guide our guests through the gate to our back garden (rather than to our front door) I placed cut out dinosaur footprints along the path. A simple way to let people know where to go and to get them in the theme.
We just stuck with ordinary balloons, but if you’re a bit more creatively gifted, these dinosaur balloons from Party Pieces are really cute.
Dinosaur Party Food
Baking is not my strong point – but it only takes a bit of creativity to add a dinosaur theme to your party food. Here are some dinosaur party food ideas.
Here’s my take on the dinosaur snack mix from makelifelovelycom I simply added some gummy dinosaurs and candy-covered chocolate eggs to some popcorn to create this fun party snack.
Dinosaur Footprint Iced Biscuits
The children helped with food decoration by icing biscuits. The idea was to have dinosaur footprints in the icing (made by ‘walking’ a toy dinosaur over the icing) but the footprints didn’t come out too clearly – probably a combination of the icing being too runny and the weather being hot.
Watermelon Dinosaur Head
My husband cut a toothy mouth out of a watermelon, scooped it out and we added fruit kebabs. A few blueberries and cherry tomatoes were added for eyes.
Dinosaur Cupcake Toppers
These Dinosaur Cupcake Toppers would make a great addition to any dinosaur party.
I got the idea, and recipe, for a Volcano cake from party pieces. The decoration was really simple – pour melted chocolate over the cake and add broken honeycomb and lollies (aka candy/sweeties). Then add some sparklers and candles for the finishing touch.
Dinosaur Party Games
Dinosaur Egg Hunt
Having a dinosaur party just before Easter is very handy as there are lots of eggs in the shops! I bought a selection of chocolate eggs to hide in the garden for a dinosaur egg hunt, but when I realised it was going to be a hot day I began to worry about them melting before they were found. I decided that while the children were having their party food in the back garden my husband would hide the eggs in the front garden. Then as soon as they had finished eating the hunt was on. However, in this short time the eggs had melted! I might have been better getting these Dinosaurs Eggs with Mini Toy Dinosaur Figures instead.
If you have a sand pit then a dinosaur dig is a fun activity to include at your party. Bury some Dinosaur Figures in the sand and let the kids dig them out. Kids love digging around in the sand and finding hidden treasures. We don’t have a sandpit so we didn’t do this activity, but we did decorate the table with dinosaurs and gave each child a few toy dinosaurs in their goodie bags.
And finally, here are some dinosaur themed goodie bag ideas from Amazon (click on the images for more details).
The party’s now over and everyone had a great time. My son has started school and is loving it. So now we get back to normal routine – until the next birthday next month…
